Buying a car in Nigeria - Tips

Looking to buy a car in Nigeria from a car dealer or from an individual.

Tips before buying used or new car from car dealers or private sellers in Nigeria.

  • Beware of 419 Scams - Don't be fooled. If it is too good to be true.

  • Beware of dealer scams - Some car dealers might try to sell you cars without genuine papers. Verify all car paper work is legit.

  • Make sure the car is not stolen - Deal with reliable car dealers. Don't buy off some "John Doe" off the street.

  • Make sure you check the VIN - Very important. You can always check the VIN number of a vehicle to get the car history.

  • Make sure you know the owner - If you are dealing with individual car dealers, make sure you know who you are dealing with. Don't just deal with anyone that has a "for sale" sign on their car.

  • Don't buy from road side dealers - There are some car dealers that put up "for sale" signs on cars. Be careful - Make sure car is not stolen. Get more information about the car.

  • Test drive the car - Always test drive the car you are buying thoroughly. Get a second opinino. Have a reliable auto mechanic check out the car for potential problems.

  • Get a written agreement / confirmation - Make sure you obtain a written receipt and confirmation from owner.

  • Warranty - Get a written agreement, if any, in regards to warranty of the car.

  • Compare prices - Make sure you are not overpaying. Use online car sites to compare prices. Compare cars by make, model, year, price, mileage, etc.

  • Always get a second opinion either from a friend, mechanic or even another car dealer.
